Shopping with Children

Shopping with Children

by Carly,

Why is it so hard to run errands with children? There are too many reasons to mention but sometimes it is inevitable we don't always have the choice to shop quietly alone in a store with no worries that our kids will break some thing or wine for some thing or poop. I would love to be able to look at things and actually TRY THINGS ON!

When I do have to bring my kids with me which is most of the time. I try different things that do help. I'll share a few things that work for me and the upside and downside of my solutions.

The Bribe: The Upside is My daughters will do pretty well if they know they get to pick a treat at the end. When they start to misbehave I can remind them that they needs to do better to earn the reward. The downside to this is the actual treat picking. I don't always want my kids to have some giant candy bar or sticky treat and right now my girls loves GUM! It gets everywhere! Enough said.

The Helper: The upside is that Involving my kids in my shopping makes them feel so proud of themselves. I let them pick some produce and put items in the cart. I also Let them choose a flavor of juice or yogurt or some thing like that. The downside to this is that sometimes they lose interest half way through and the rest of the errand is miserable.

The Joy Ride: The upside is that make believe makes them happy and well behaved. My husband does this one. He finds one of those carts where all my kids fit like the ones with the big plastic seats in the front. He then creates a make believe story like they are in a Rocket ship or something like that and Zooms through the aisles. My Girls obviously adore this! The Downside is the unsuspecting people in the rockets path. For the record he has never actually ran into any body, but it could happen. I also have a hard time finding the rocket ship when I have to put actual groceries in it and wander around the HUGE store with my arms full of stuff and no cart.

Those are the solutions we use most often. What works for you while your shopping with the kiddo's?

Anna Montana

Anna Montana

by Kate Hayes

As you may know (from reading this post), my oldest child started kindergarten last week. (And it was a huge success! If you actually care to read more about that, you can read this post on my personal blog.)

So now, at the ripe old age of five, Anna feels like she has “made it.” She is finally in school with the “big kids,” which has been her lifelong dream. She can also read now, which allows her to do many things for herself that she couldn’t do when she was younger, like read the nutritional content in her breakfast cereal. In addition, Anna has recently discovered the ‘tween shows on the Disney Channel. Most notably, Hannah Montana.

Before Hannah Montana, we spent more than a year watching iCarly on Nickelodeon (another ‘tween show)…so I’m not exactly sure how Anna’s new fascination with Hannah makes me feel like she has crossed a frontier. Maybe it’s the fact that Hannah Montana is a musical show, so now Anna is bee-bopping around the house singing pop songs like a teenager, and trying out dance moves that she is not coordinated enough to pull off yet. I just feel like she’s suddenly trying to act so much older than FIVE. And I wonder if this is something that the whole kindergarten set is doing…or if I’m going to be the one mom who gets angry phone calls from other moms because my kid has prematurely aged their kids. (I guess we’ll find out soon.)

The evening before school started, I took Anna on a mother-daughter trip to the mall to pick up a few last things we needed…like tennis shoes for gym class (she likes to wear dresses almost every day, so we have not purchased “real” tennis shoes in years). While we were looking for shoes, Anna spotted a pair of hideous Hannah Montana tennis shoes, which of course, she begged me to buy. I said NO. I am not a fan of characters on kids’ apparel, so I was not about to start that precedent with a pair of $30 Hannah Montana shoes that I knew I would have to fight her to NOT wear every single day.

That was a good decision, and I knew it. BUT, Anna was so brokenhearted about it that I told her that IF we saw a Hannah Montana shirt, I might consider buying it instead. (At least she can’t wear a shirt everyday! And it would be less of an investment.) After all, it was the night before Anna’s first day of kindergarten, and I wanted it to be special for her. I didn’t want to ruin it with my “lofty” opinions about children’s clothing.

To make a long story short, somehow the “IF” we can find a Hannah Montana shirt quickly turned into “we must find a Hannah Montana shirt!” I walked that kid all over a very large mall in a very short time, looking in every store that we thought might have one. We saw nothing. Finally, it was getting late and we were at the end of the line. JC Penney was the last store in front of us. I told Anna that we would run in and take a look, but if we couldn’t find anything, we would have to head home.  The look on her face was so forlorn. Despite my feelings about character apparel, I was actually praying for a miracle.

We made a beeline for the kids’ section of JC Penney, and hit every rack. No Hannah Montana shirts. I could see the tears welling up in Anna’s eyes. I stopped at one last clearance sign, and started quickly flipping through the hangers on the rack. A shinier-than-usual tag caught my eye. I held my breath. Could it be…?

YES! It was! A Hannah Montana t-shirt! It was the ONLY one on the rack. AND…it was a size five. What are the odds? I swear, it was like I saw sunbeams coming down from Heaven and heard a choir of angels singing. Anna squealed in delight, hugged her shirt, then skipped and giggled all the way out of the mall. She was SO. INCREDIBLY. HAPPY. (And I was happy too – the shirt ended up being marked down to three dollars! Now, that’s a “character apparel” investment that I can live with!)

The next day, Anna put on her Hannah Montana shirt after school (yes, she knew better than to ask to wear it on her first day), and sang louder than ever. I think the shirt makes her feel even older and cooler.
The question is…should I be excited that I was able to do something that made my daughter so happy and amused that she thinks she is so big now…OR, should I be concerned that if THIS is what she likes at age five, who knows what she’s going to like when she’s ten? Am I a bad mom for even letting her watch Hannah Montana in the first place?

What have you done (or would you do) with your own daughter?

Corioliss Classic Pro Flat Iron review & GIVEAWAY

Corioliss Classic Pro Flat Iron review & GIVEAWAY

I straighten my hair EVERY SINGLE DAY! I recently had the opportunity to review one of Misikko's Professional Hair Straighteners

The Corioliss Classic Pro Flat Iron (in black) has many features that I love!
I think the best feature is that it heats up in less than 6 seconds! I often have to run out during the day and I love that I can quickly turn on the Flat Iron and use it almost immediately!
I also love that you can set the temperature anywhere from 140°F to 410°F. I usually use the hottest setting, but once in a while my daughter wants me to use it on her so I like that I can adjust the temperature!

Misikko also sells the HANA Professional Flat Iron 1" which is the customer's choice for favorite straightening iron, I think I will have to try that one out too!

I did get to try the HANA Shine Shield Thermal Protectant which can also be used as a leave in conditioner - I LOVE that it does not make my hair feel or look greasy!

Be sure to check out Misikko for all your hair needs, did I mention that they have some of the best hair dryers ?!!!

Montessori Family Fun Day & Link-Up

Montessori Family Fun Day & Link-Up

Every Sunday we call Family Fun Day. We start the day by going to church and then do something together as a family. We try as much as possible to keep Sunday as a day to spend with just our family and enjoying each other.

I decided to post about one of our family fun days as today's Montessori Moment because often times our family fun days also fit into practical life activities!

Snow White said she really wanted to go berry picking for family fun day today - since berry season is done we decided to do the next best thing...apple picking!

We went into our backyard and brought the ladder, the wheelbarrow, a big tub and some pails and got to work.

First we sorted through all the apples that had already fallen on the ground. Snow White would put the bad apples in the wheelbarrow and the good apples into the tub.
Many of the apples from the ground were rotten so we brought them to the compost bin. Snow White was happy because she said the worms would really like the apples and that it would be a special treat for them!
After we sorted through all the fallen apples we got right to picking! Snow White loved being on the ladder with Daddy picking as many apples as she could reach!

Once the apples were all picked Snow White and the neighbor boy checked the bin and took out any leaves that were still attached.

Then we loaded all the good apples into the wheelbarrow. Daddy pulled the heavy load while the kids practiced teamwork and carried the red pail of apples back together!

We had such a fun afternoon - made for a great family fun day. We now want to take the girls and go get the apples pressed to make juice! Snow White is so excited to see how it will be done! I am actually excited about it too!
We have some apple theme work on the shelves in the classroom now too - I love when practical life activities go along with what is on the shelf!

How To Transform Your Blog For Free (Or Very little)

How To Transform Your Blog For Free (Or Very little)

I love to show people how to customize their blog- easily and inexpensively. As fall approaches many people are looking to change up their blogs- today I am going to show you how to make your blog beautiful for almost nothing. Here are some neat resources I have come across that are a great way to update your blog- without spending very much or nothing at all.

1. Change up your background with pattern cooler
Pattern cooler is a completely free resource to make your own custom pattern backgrounds. You just pick your pattern and download the samples they provide, or you can edit the colors of the pattern to make it your own. Once you have downloaded the pattern you can upload it onto your blog using the blogger template designer.

2. Add a music playlist, photo slideshow or animated banner using snacktools
I have really enjoyed using snacktools- and they have been fun to create with. You can see the banner I made using snacktools here- it alot of fun. However I am not providing support on how to use snacktools- it's use at your own risk.

3. Make your own photo blog banners using picasa.
This is great option for those who don't know how photoshop, Picasa makes it very easy for those with very little technical know how to make their own professional slide show. You can check out this tutorial on how to do this effectively.

4. Snag a premade template from premade for a purpose
Premades for a purpose has many cute and inexpensive premade template for blogger- they cost very little but it all goes to a good cause. For templates of the free variety check out Simply Fabulous Blogger Templates

5. Make some widgets to improve the functionality and navigation of your blog using widgetbox
widgetbox has a great variety of premade widgets- but along with that if you cannot find what you are looking for you can make your own widget.

I hope these points were informative and helpful in helping you make your blog yours. What kind of things do use to change up your blog? I'll love to hear about new and useful tools.

Check out the blog of the month! This is one of my premade templates but just for our readers on mommy moment for this week only this template is free!
After the week is over it will be for sale for $5.
NOTE: Feel free to share about this freebie on your blogs- but please link to this post and not the direct download- thanks!
Should Moms and Teens share clothes?

Should Moms and Teens share clothes?

Q: Should I share clothes with my daughters?

A:  When I read this question there are several assumptions I need to make.

Assumption #1 - the daughter is a teenager;

Assumption #2 - the family is of an economic background where everyone can afford their own clothes; and

Assumption #3 - the mother and the daughter already have their own separate clothes.

Now if we go with all these assumptions I would also like to ask why they are sharing clothes.  Teenagers are funny creatures (yes…I called them creatures…because they are) they want their independence, but still want to be connected with their family group on some type of emotional level.  I also think teenagers need the space to explore who they are and what they like, with in the safety of a healthy family unit.

Now if a teen wants to explore/experiment in the world of fashion and their mom is showing up to the PTA meeting with pop cans in her hair, than we have not given the child a chance to explore herself.

I realize that not all teens are going to dress like Lady Gaga and not all mom’s are going to share this fashion trend, however lets consider the following.  Being a child of the 90’s I can recall a band called Kris Kross who’s trend setting style was to wear their clothes backwards.  This was “cool” for a time, and a stupid fad that many teens got caught in who also thought it was stupid but still dressed like idiots because it was cool.

I can say this because I tried this…so there.  My parents did not say “you look like an idiot” or “my, that looks cool”.  If they simply let it be.  Now what would I have done if my dad woke up for work walked out the door with his uniform on backwards.

Another question I would like to ask is why are you dressing like your daughter?  This is the time when your daughter is trying to make her own identity and you should be in yours.  Be the role model and show the stability that your daughter at this critical junction in her life needs.

A Brave New World

A Brave New World

by Kate Hayes

The world is about to change in a big way. This week. Do you sense it? Can you feel how different life is going to be from now on?

My oldest child is going to start Kindergarten.

Oh…not a big deal for you? My bad. It’s so monumental for me that sometimes it feels like world leaders might be sitting around discussing it. “You know, Mr. President…curly-haired Anna starts kindergarten next week.” “Next week? Already? Wow. The next thing you know, we’ll have world peace.” (That’s where they chuckle diplomatically.)

My baby will be in Kindergarten!

Just yesterday, Anna was learning to crawl. And now she’s getting ready to begin a journey that will last for the next 13 years (21 if she decides to become a doctor). She is totally brave and completely ready for it. In fact, she is probably MORE prepared than she even needs to be. She can read books and count by tens and name any state on the United States map (Canada…we still need to work on). I know she is going to blow her teacher away. The hard part is that I won’t be there to see it.

I have to admit that I am nervous. I don’t know why…the kid has been in daycare for most of her life. But somehow it seems different this time. Anna will be at REAL school, and WE will be elsewhere. She will be starting to develop an identity of her own, separate from us. She will have successes and failures; she will assert herself and defend herself; she will make friends, and probably decide that some people just “aren’t her type.” The point is that she will be “out there.” On her own. I wish I could be there to hold her hand, but I know that she doesn’t need me to. She has been preparing for this for the past five years. All I can do is hope that she will fill me in on what happens every night at dinner. And pray that the values that we have given her run deep and strong.

You know, it was one thing to become a parent. It’s a totally different thing to become the parent of a child who has homework and school plays and parent-teacher meetings. It seems like it wasn’t that long ago that my husband and I were the kids finding our way in the world. When did we grow up?

The Top 10 things I Think About When a New School Year Begins.

The Top 10 things I Think About When a New School Year Begins.

by Carly

1. How old I am getting! This year I will have a 2nd grader and a preschooler. I can't believe my kids are getting this big! I am starting to feel old. When you have your first baby you look at other family's with school aged children and say WOW, that is such a long ways away. well I am at that point and it makes me feel a little elderly.

2.That my seven year old and I already have different taste in clothes! She loves anything that is sparkly and glittery and of course pink. Which I know is completely normal and typical.  I have learned in school shopping this year that it makes her feel good to make some of her own clothing decisions.  I don't have to love every bejewled shirt she picks out. (I of course only let her pick out appropriate clothes for school)

3. Starting a new school year equals more showers! Let me explain,  in the summer there is no schedule to my day. I don't get up early and get ready in the morning! So when school starts It is nice  get my kids ready and myself ready to take the them to school.

4. Becoming a chauffeur. My husband and I have one car. Which works out pretty well for us most of the time, but can be pretty tricky. A lot of my daily time will be picking and dropping off my loved ones at various locations. I really don't mind too much but some days it does get a little old.

5. To pack or not to pack a lunch. Last year I packed my daughters school lunch every day. It lacked variety and consisted of a lot of lunchables. This year My daughter Wants school lunch which seems pretty healthy for most of the days. We will see how that goes we will probably pack lunches and have her buy some at school. I also have goals  for my lunch making skills to be a lot more creative and appetizing.

6. An earlier bed time. My Daughter's school starts later than I like at 9:00 AM but it still takes me a while to get everybody ready for the day which means no more late nights. I really like it when my kids are in bed earlier. I just need to go to sleep early as well and life would be much better.

7. More peace and quiet. I love  my girls so much don't get me wrong but it is nice for all of us to have small breaks from each other. For three days a week a couple hours a day I will only have my one year old! I am so looking forward to not so traumatic grocery shopping, cleaning, and much needed time  to get things done.

8. Home work drama. I know my daughter is only in Second grade. She has been in school for one week and has had home work every night. This stresses her out and I am really trying all kinds of different things to make it easier for her to just sit down and do it. Hopefully we can find a technique that works for her and extinguishes some of the drama. We already have our share of drama at my house!

9. Money money money! It seems to cost so much to get my kids ready for school! School outfits, supplies, shoes, new socks and underwear, it never ends! I try not too buy too much and figure we can always get a couple outfits for the start of the year and some other things as they need them through out the year.

10.Time together is more precious.. Since we are apart more we tend to make more of an effort when we are all home. On Mondays we have a Family home evening where we share a spiritual message or activity and enjoy being together followed by a treat of course. My kids love this. I hope to be organized in doing this than I was in the summer.

What are some things you think about as a new school year begins?

Through our Children\

Through our Children's Eyes!

I pulled our rocking chair out of the living room onto our front veranda and grabbed a hot cup of tea and my husbands "Dad's Bible".

I opened it up and read Psalm chapter 25. When I was finished reading the chapter I decided to read the devotional under it.

I will quote some of it here...
Some Sunday morning take a look at the dads in your congregation. How engaged are they in the service? Do they look like they're enthralled with God's holy presence? Then, the next time you're at a big ball game, look around at the dads in the stands. How engaged are these men in what's going on?
Maybe the above comparison isn't fair. But the point is well taken. Our children are watching what we do. If our kids observe us counting down our favorite baseball team's "magic number" from July, they'll begin to believe that sports are worth serious attention. If we get fired up reading about the stock market over breakfast, they'll get the idea that stocks are worth being interested in. And if they see us sleepily checking our watches or mumbling our way through the hymns during a church service, they'll decide that knowing God is about as exciting as watching a passing freight train......
Quote from Dad's Bible, The Father's Plan, Notes by Robert Wolgemuth. copyright 2007 by Robert D. Wolgemuth Published in Nashville, Tennessee, by Thomas Nelson, Inc. (NCV)

Made me think! What do my children see me doing? Do they see me being kind to others? Volunteering? reading my bible? playing? having fun with my husband...their daddy?

I am so glad I read that passage today, so glad I took time to reflect!

Review of Anya\

Review of Anya's Giraffes - Win Limited Edition Print from Lillunia $280 value!

How would you like to win a limited edition print from Lillunia, numbered and matted (un-framed) with a certificate of authenticity. Just read on for your chance to win!

Be sure to follow Lillunia on Twitter and Like them on Facebook.

Lillunia sent us a limited edition print of Anya's Giraffes for me to review. Our 25 month old daughter is absolutely in love with giraffes so I knew this would be a perfect addition to her bedroom. The piece came perfectly packaged and I was so impressed with the quality as soon as I opened the package! What an impressive work of art!
Lillunia creates enchanting original watercolor art and limited edition giclee prints that depict animals and their offspring in the wild. They help bring the magic of the natural world into children's environments in a stylish and unique way.

Lillunia offers classic "art" pieces as well as a "focus series" with a more contemporary edge and a "modern series". They also create something called the Lillunia, "Mosaic" which is a collection of framed images that covers a child's wall  taking them into the jungle, the arctic or the backyard pond.

I know that Anya's Giraffes will be a part of our daughters bedroom decor for many years. Now she loves to say "Ni Night raffes" as we tuck her in each night. Years from now she may love to look at the Anya's Giraffe print and dream of seeing real giraffes like this in the wild.

The heart of Lillunia's mission is ecological education. Our content and the materials we use to make and frame our work is the greenest possible. We believe in teaching our children about their vital role in the planet's future; that is why we have chosen to do what we do.

Mondays Montessori Moment

Mondays Montessori Moment

I'm sick! The day we got back from my 30th Birthday holiday I came down with a sinus cold, now it has become a chest cold and I am coughing non stop.

I wanted to say Thank-you to each one of you who left a comment on my post last week about my grandma knitting with our daughter. It really is special to me!

Here are some random pics from this month that I do not think I have posted about yet...enjoy!

Nesting Dolls
feeling the bears
and sorting them by color
painting and mixing colors
Washing the brushes
cutting wooden fruit
doing the shape clock puzzle
printing words on the chalkboard
filling in the shapes on the boat.

We will be starting regular time in the classroom in 3 weeks. Hard to believe how quickly the summer has passed by. Hard also to believe my little girl will start kindergarten, oh how the tears will flow!

Feel free to Link up your Montessori Moment from the week!

(Please be sure to display our Mondays Montessori Moment Button in your post or sidebar!)

Please put the name of the post in the link title and link directly to that post, not your blog home!
I also link-up my Montessori Moment each week to the link-up at One Hook Wonder.
