The Top 10 things I Think About When a New School Year Begins.

by Carly

1. How old I am getting! This year I will have a 2nd grader and a preschooler. I can’t believe my kids are getting this big! I am starting to feel old. When you have your first baby you look at other family’s with school aged children and say WOW, that is such a long ways away. well I am at that point and it makes me feel a little elderly.

2.That my seven year old and I already have different taste in clothes! She loves anything that is sparkly and glittery and of course pink. Which I know is completely normal and typical.  I have learned in school shopping this year that it makes her feel good to make some of her own clothing decisions.  I don’t have to love every bejewled shirt she picks out. (I of course only let her pick out appropriate clothes for school)

3. Starting a new school year equals more showers! Let me explain,  in the summer there is no schedule to my day. I don’t get up early and get ready in the morning! So when school starts It is nice  get my kids ready and myself ready to take the them to school.

4. Becoming a chauffeur. My husband and I have one car. Which works out pretty well for us most of the time, but can be pretty tricky. A lot of my daily time will be picking and dropping off my loved ones at various locations. I really don’t mind too much but some days it does get a little old.

5. To pack or not to pack a lunch. Last year I packed my daughters school lunch every day. It lacked variety and consisted of a lot of lunchables. This year My daughter Wants school lunch which seems pretty healthy for most of the days. We will see how that goes we will probably pack lunches and have her buy some at school. I also have goals  for my lunch making skills to be a lot more creative and appetizing.

6. An earlier bed time. My Daughter’s school starts later than I like at 9:00 AM but it still takes me a while to get everybody ready for the day which means no more late nights. I really like it when my kids are in bed earlier. I just need to go to sleep early as well and life would be much better.

7. More peace and quiet. I love  my girls so much don’t get me wrong but it is nice for all of us to have small breaks from each other. For three days a week a couple hours a day I will only have my one year old! I am so looking forward to not so traumatic grocery shopping, cleaning, and much needed time  to get things done.

8. Home work drama. I know my daughter is only in Second grade. She has been in school for one week and has had home work every night. This stresses her out and I am really trying all kinds of different things to make it easier for her to just sit down and do it. Hopefully we can find a technique that works for her and extinguishes some of the drama. We already have our share of drama at my house!

9. Money money money! It seems to cost so much to get my kids ready for school! School outfits, supplies, shoes, new socks and underwear, it never ends! I try not too buy too much and figure we can always get a couple outfits for the start of the year and some other things as they need them through out the year.

10.Time together is more precious.. Since we are apart more we tend to make more of an effort when we are all home. On Mondays we have a Family home evening where we share a spiritual message or activity and enjoy being together followed by a treat of course. My kids love this. I hope to be organized in doing this than I was in the summer.

What are some things you think about as a new school year begins?

Our school system is way early as this the kiddos 4th week of the school year. I can totally relate though with the "old" comment. I felt young and carefree with the kids as toddlers, going the library story times, zoo, and hour long play dates at McDonalds. Now I have a 3rd grader who needs constant help to get his homework ever finished and 5th grader who started shaving her legs this week. Gasp! Yep, having school age kids really can age a mom!Mich

Fun but earthy tips; I really enjoyed reading them! Definitely Tweeting it ;)

I'm actually coordinating a back to school writing contest for kids on my website, Booksicals.com! It's a great way for kids to get psyched about going back to school AND they get some nice swag for themselves and their teachers. As teacher-minded folks or homeschooling parents, your readers may be interested! Here's the link to our contest: http://www.booksicals.com/booksicals-back-to-school-contest-for-kids

Again, really enjoyed your blog. See you on Twitter!~Dagny
