What was your favorite thing about recess?

I remember my grade 4 year. The highlight of the year for me was jumping rope with my friends at recess. I could not wait for the recess bell to ring so that I could race outside to meet up with my friends near the bike racks.
We would each have our own skipping rope and one larger rope to play different games.

Some of my favorite skip rope games were:

  • Miss Mary Mack – “Miss Mary Mack, Mack, Mack All Dressed in Black, Black, Black…”
  • Miss Susie – “Miss Suies had a baby, She named him Tiny Tim. She put him in the bathtub, to see if he could swim, swim, swim…”
  • Teddy Bear – “Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, turn around. Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, touch the ground…”
  • I turned around the cor-ner – “I had a little race car, number 68. I turned around the cor-ner and slammed on the brakes…”

It seemed like we just got started skipping and the bell would ring for us to return to our classrooms. I remember sitting in my desk just waiting for the time to go by till the next recess break. I admit, I was a little jump rope crazy!

I know we had many more fun skipping songs. I’ll have to do some research to see what I can find. My little girl is just learning to skip, I can’t wait to teach her some of these favorites from my past!
