4 ways to protect your home from holiday hazards

Snow is falling outside, crowds swarm shopping malls, and eggnog is chilling in the fridge. The festive season is a joyful time of year but it also involves its own unique set of risks – and many are not anticipated. Here’s a guideline with four of the most important tips to ward off the threat to your good tidings and cheer:

protect-your-home

1. The more light, the better

Ice patches can lurk on your driveway and walkway, making daily wanders more hazardous. Even if you regularly shovel and de-ice, you, your family, or your guests face potential slips and falls. Now is a good time to install additional lighting. Insurance broker, Western Financial Group recommends motion sensor lighting to keep your property safe.

2. Beware of fire

Increased use of fireplaces, candles, and even Christmas trees can pose a threat of fire. Safeguard your home by ensuring your Christmas trees stay hydrated, keeping heat sources far away, and inspecting your electrical setup, especially if you have a high number of light strands. If you have a wood stove or chimney, make sure they are cleaned and properly maintained before using them. Always keep an up-to-date extinguisher on hand and learn how to use it.

3. Update your insurance coverage

While this is a joyous time of year, Grinches may look to take advantage of the season and steal your presents. That is why it’s wise to be proactive about protecting your belongings. Your insurance broker can help make sure that any new valuables are covered. And for those travelling over the holidays, Western Financial Group suggests you arrange to have somebody look after your place, otherwise you might face insurance exclusions.

4. Take care of your guests

With the influx of social events and parties during the holidays, property owners may have to deal with unexpected dangers.  Case in point: should a guest hurt themselves in your home or get into a car accident after one too many drinks, you could be vulnerable to the repercussions. If this is a worry, investigate special events permits which could limit liability. Again, it is always worthwhile to discuss your situation with a trusted professional.

Good advice! I display my partylite candles without burning them, and the scents still fill the air. We did extra safety checks over the holidays as we were pet sitting our friend's cat.
