Canadian Tire “Decks the Halls” at Children’s Hospitals #SpreadTheCheer #Giveaway {CAN}

It is the second week of December, and the inside of our home is decorated with a tree, lights and other festive items.  As we are driving around town running errands or dropping the kids off at their weekly activities, we see other hints that Christmas is on it’s way.  Decorated trees, nativity scenes, inflatable Santas and snowmen.

While these different scenes and decorations make our homes look welcoming and joyous, there are others who are not in their homes celebrating the Christmas season and do not have twinkling lights on trees or fun and festive inflatable Santas to look at.  Many families are spending the holiday season in the hospital with a loved one who is sick and suffering from a serious disease.  A lot of these individuals are children, not s0 unlike my own, who love everything surrounding the Christmas season.

Canadian Tire Children Hospital

This Christmas, Canadian Tire made it their mission to light up the holidays by donating indoor and outdoor décor, lights and more than 2,000 gifts to nine Children’s Hospitals across Canada!

In November, teams of volunteers including employees from local Canadian Tires, started “decking the halls” of children’s hospitals.  These hospitals were:

  • St. John’s: Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre
  • Halifax: IWK Health Centre
  • Montreal: Montreal Children’s Hospital
  • Montreal: Centre de réadaptation Marie Enfant du CHU Sainte-Justine
  • Ottawa: Children’s Foundation of Eastern Ontario
  • Toronto: The Hospital for Sick Children
  • Winnipeg: Children’s Hospital – HSC Winnipeg
  • Saskatoon: Pediatrics – Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan
  • Vancouver: BC Children’s Hospital

These 9 hospitals received 14 foot tall inflatable Santas, decorated Christmas trees, thousands of lights and many gifts for their young patients.  Not only were these hospitals “decked” out this Christmas season, but ALL donated décor will be kept by each hospital so they can use it in years to come!

Canadian Tire Outdoor Decor

Susan O’Brien, who is Vice President of Marketing for Canadian Tire, said that they wanted to do their part in spreading joy during the Christmas season.  Dana Erickson was delighted when Canadian Tire reached out:

“We always try to keep patients’ spirits up over the holidays, but limited resources can make it challenging to create a Christmas-like environment throughout,” said Mr. Dana Erickson, Chief Operating Officer, Health Sciences Centre (HSC) Winnipeg. “When Canadian Tire reached out and offered to turn our outdoor space into a winter wonderland with lights and decorations, as well as decorations for the hospital we were delighted. Being able to bring Christmas spirit to life means the world to our patients and their families, as well as our neighbourhood.”

This Christmas as you decorate and drive around town seeing the displays on neighbors lawns, take time to remember those not at home for the Christmas season.  Perhaps you can take a note from Canadian Tire’s book and do something for those in hospital this season.

Check out this video of how the volunteers decorated the hospitals and the reactions of the kids and families spending time there. Share this video with the hashtag #SpreadTheCheer to encourage others to make a difference this Christmas season.
