THE BENEFITS OF STARTING A MOTHER-DAUGHTER JOURNAL

I’m so happy that I started a mother-daughter journal with my little girl. There is no other bond quite like the bond of a mother and daughter. I want my daughter to always be able to talk to me.

Sometimes, it is hard for kids to verbalize everything. My youngest daughter had a hard time sharing certain things, so I thought it would be a great idea to start a mother daughter journal. Besides creating open communication between us, it also helps her with her reading and writing skills.

Whenever my daughter writes in our journal, she places it on my bedside table. I write in it before I go to sleep and I return it to her room.

Sometimes my daughter shares some of her struggles, but many times, she just writes what she is thinking about. No matter what she writes, I am just happy that she is communicating with me. With her permission, I will share an excerpt that you will also see in the photo….

Can you pray that my hand will feel better and that I will be able to go to vaulting (vaulting is a type of gymnastics on horseback). And look in my room at my dresser (she had a drawn a picture and left it on her dresser for me).

Love, Emily, I love you Mommy. xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo. Oh, Look in my room for a pencil (to write her back) and please fix my curtains.

Then my reply…

Emily,

I pray you feel better and have a good sleep. I love you.

How do you want your curtains?

I share this with you – because I want you to see how real it is. There is no script, you may not always be able to read every word – and many times there will not be BIG things to discuss, but the thing to remember is that you are building relationship and open communication. I should also mention that I do not correct her spelling in this journal, that is not what this is for. We can practice spelling at another time. (And up until this point my little girl has only attended French school, even though we speak English at home).

We just use a little lined denim journal that my girl loves. If the thought of blank pages worries you, you could also purchase a journal with writing prompts (from my affiliate link) to get you started.

THE BENEFITS OF STARTING A MOTHER-DAUGHTER JOURNAL

A MOTHER-DAUGHTER JOURNAL BUILDS TRUST: One of the basic attributes of healthy relationships is having trust between one another. As you share your thoughts between you and your daughter, you build trust and security. If your daughter knows she can talk to you about anything, she will.

YOU ESTABLISH COMMUNICATION: Sometimes, you don’t know how to communicate in speech exactly how you feel or think. Being able to write your thoughts down on paper and ponder them before “saying” them helps to establish healthy communication between you and your daughter.

YOU CAN GIVE ADVICE IN A NON-OFFENSIVE MANNER: As your daughter gets older, she is going to have a world of information thrown at her. It may not be easy for her to always come to you for advice, but with a mother-daughter journal, you can give advice through sharing your own stories in a non-offensive way.

IT’S A GREAT WAY TO BOND: In the business of life, it is hard to find quality time to spend with your family. From activities to work, there is little time in-between. Having a mother-daughter journal helps create and strengthen that bond you established at birth and grows upon it.

Having a mother-daughter journal keeps you in the loop of what’s going on with your daughter, but also keeps her feeling accepted, loved and secure.
