Binomial Cube

From now on, each Monday will feature a Montessori “work” or activity. I will post about activities the children are currently working on or may feature a work from the past. I hope you will enjoy “Mondays Montessori Moment” as well as the many other wonderful posts we have throughout the week.
Be sure to check out the bottom of the ABOUT US section to see the daily line-up!

Snow White has been working with the Binomial Cube many times this week. I introduced it to her for the first time about 6 months ago, but she did not seem to show much interest in it until now.

First she took the cubes out of the box.

Then placed them in order of size from largest to smallest.

Then she placed the large red cube back in place.

Then she placed the red on red, black on black and blue on blue.

She self corrected by making sure the sides closed,

and the lid fit on top.

I have seen this “work” introduced in other ways, but this is the way that made it clear for Snow White. If you would like to see a tutorial on this work you can check one our HERE

The Binomial Cube is a concrete representation of the algebraic formula (a+b)3. The factors of the equation are represented by the cubes and prisms. The primary Montessori child explores the Binomial Cube as a sensorial activity of visual discrimination of color and form. This indirect preparation for algebra prepares the child for the elementary Montessori class. – Family Montessori

Make sure you checkout this weeks giveaways. They close tonight…winners will be posted tomorrow!

WOW! I am LOVING your new blog and layout! Everything is so nice and organized - just the way I like it. :) I'm really looking forward to the Monday Montessori Moments - this post was excellent and the technical tid-bit at the end is excellent for those not familiar with Montessori materials. Give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done, Jody!!
