Concern, Culture & Craft

This weeks Work of Art Wednesday Post ties into something we are dealing with at home!
Since we have arrived home from holiday’s our daughter is having a terribly hard time going to sleep at night. She keeps yelling that she is scared. I have asked her what makes her afraid, and she could never answer, so I asked if she could draw me a picture of what is making her scared.
She drew a sword.
Well, my husband and I have tried a bunch of things. Today for craft time I thought we would make a Dream Catcher (she got the kit as a Christmas gift last year).
We are a Christian family and we pray every night. She has never had this trouble before (she is 4.5 yrs old) this is just such a strange behavior.
Anyway, on to the dream catcher….we explained a little bit about the legend of a dream catcher (My husband is native, so we felt this to be a culturally appropriate activity!)

I have to help out quite a bit with this craft, but we had a fun time working on it together!

She thought it was so fun to lick the end of the string to make it easier for her to thread.

Didn’t it turn out beautiful?

Too bad it did not work out LOL!!
Tomorrow night we will try “Scare Away Spray” made with water, cranberry oil, and drop of food coloring with a nice label on the bottle!!! This is a process, it will take some time, but we will get through it!
If any of you have a child with irrational fears, here is an EXCELLENT article that Carleen passed on to me!  I completely agree with the advice in this article.

I enjoyed reading this article. Thank you very for sharing. I have a dream catcher story for you though.About nine years ago, my 'now' husband and two other friends of ours stumbled upon a Pow-Wow by accident and were welcomed to stay and join in on the festivities, so we did. Before leaving Indian land I purchased a dream catcher for myself for I was having some really difficult issues with my dreams and just life in general.

Upon returning home from the Pow-Wow I placed the dream catcher above my head on the headboard in hopes of curing my dream disturbances. A few nights went by and nothing changed, my dreams remained troubling.

So, one afternoon after work I was driving home with my co-workers *in the carpool lane* when the unfotunate happened. Driving 50 mph in the carpool lane I struck and killed an older man from Pakistan. It was HORRIBLE. If I thought my dreams were bad back then...they certainly increased and were more vivid and disturbing. To this day I'm still troubled by the accident. UGH!

And this has to do with your Dream Catcher craft because my husband SWEARS that the dream catcher I purchased from the Pow-Wow was cursed and is the reason for my killing the gentleman on the freeway in the carpool lane.

Of course I don't associate the two, but every single time I see a dream catcher (dc) or hear the word dc I relive the accident in my head all over again. It's horrible.

Just thought I would share, I hope I didn't upset anyone. I'm sorry if I did.

I do like your dream catcher though, it turned out beautiful!

God Bless!

I absolutely love dream catchers! The problem is, I never actually find one with exactly what I want on it, or in the color I want it in! Like a Pink heart web with red beads and blue feathers. Thanks for your directions, I can now make my own exactly how I want it!

Thanks for sharing this article! My son has been scared of "woo's" (ghosts) since he was two. We've explained to him that we have good woo's in our house who are happy. We always recognize his fear and never dismiss it. I will be sure to try the ghost spray next time around. He will get a kick out of that.

I used an all natural lavender "magic bad dream" room spray on my son's pillow for awhile. He loved it. For him, I believe, it was less about making the fears "real" as letting him have control over the situation. Take that! bad dreams.Plus the lavender is calming in itself.

Please let us know what ends up working for you. :)
