Raising Happiness ~ Book Review & Giveaway

PRODUCT MOMENT:

What do we wish most for our children? Next to being healthy, we want them to be happy, of course. Fortunately, a wide array of scientific studies show that happiness is a learned behavior, a muscle that we can help our children build and maintain.

Raising Happiness is a book, a blog, and an online parenting class.

Raising Happiness

Using her own chaotic and often hilarious real world adventures as a mom to demonstrate do’s and don’ts in action, Christine Carter, PhD, boils the process down to 10 simple, happiness-inducing steps.

With great wit, wisdom, and compassion, Carter covers the day to day pressure points of parenting—how best to discipline, get to school and activities on time, and get dinner on the table—as well as helping kids build healthy friendships and develop emotional intelligence

Dr. Carter helps you interact confidently and consistently with your kids to foster the skills, habits, and mindsets that will set the stage for positive emotions now and into their adolescence and beyond.

Inside you will discover:

  • The best way to avoid raising a brat—changing bad habits into good ones.
  • tips on how to change your kids’ attitude into gratitude.
  • the trap of trying to be perfect—and how to stay clear of its pitfalls.
  • the right way to praise kids—and why too much of the wrong kind can be just as bad as not enough.
  • the spirit of kindness—how to raise kind, compassionate, and loving children.
  • strategies for inspiring kids to do boring (but necessary) tasks-and become more self motivated in the process.

Complete with a “TRY THIS” science-made-simple tips, scripts, and strategies, Raising Happiness is a one-of-a-kind resource that will help you instill joy in your kids, and, in the process, become more joyful yourself.

There is also a Raising Happiness Class, taught via video by Christine Carter. This class is an interactive, low time-commitment online course for parents who want to raise happier children and be happier themselves. Eight themes address all aspects of parenting and give you corresponding pages to read in the book.

MOMMY MOMENT:

I received a book and past classes to review on-line.

I really liked the fact that the author admits that she has made mistakes in her life and in parenting and even shares those mistakes in the book with us. Because of her honesty I didn’t feel like I was being lectured, but instead I felt like I was being given advice from a friend who has been through the same things I am going through.

Dr. Carter starts off the book talking about “putting your oxygen mask on first”. She talks about how you need to take care of yourself, your happiness, and your relationship with your spouse or co-parent before you even start looking at your kids’ happiness.

This is something that me and my husband have noticed. When we each take time to do things for ourselves or together, our kids seem happier and are more well-behaved.

If you are looking for a parenting book that doesn’t lecture or make you feel like you are the only parent who makes mistakes, pick up this easy to read book!

AUTHOR MOMENT:

As a working mom, I know just how hard it can be to raise kids AND live a fulfilling, joyful life. My work is truly the intersection of my brain and my heart: my intellectual training in the social sciences and my very real, sometimes raw, experiences as a mother. I’m so glad that you are joining me on this journey, and I hope that you find it as rewarding and wonderful as I do.

Christine Carter, Ph.D., has helped thousands of parents find more joy in their parenting while raising happy, successful, and resilient kids.

After receiving her B.A. from Dartmouth College, Dr. Carter worked in marketing management and school administration, going on to receive her Ph.D. in sociology from UC Berkeley. Her first book, “The Other Side of Silence,” is one of the most frequently stolen books out of university libraries. Dr. Carter has been quoted in Women’s Health and Parenting magazines, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, USA Today and dozens of other publications. She has appeared on the “Oprah Winfrey Show,” the “Rachael Ray Morning Show,” “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” and NPR.
