We do a book advent calendar with my daughter since she can't have chocolates. We gather books from the library, friends and purchase a few new ones each year. The books then are all wrapped and placed in a basket under the tree with a number for each day. The books stay in the basket for the month of December and then they go away again for the following year on Jan 1. We always save Twas the Night Before Christmas for Christmas eve.
