Golfing with kids is more than a game

Golfing with kids is more than a game. As many readers know…I love my girls and I love spending time with them.  Many readers also know that I love to be outside.  And while it is not always easy to combine these loves, I had a chance last weekend at Grand Pines Golf Course, and this was the perfect course for our girls to start their golfing journey.

My girls have never been golfing before.  And while this experience took lots of patience (for them and me) they were true sports to the game.  Sometimes we tend to place lots of weight on our gear, for my girls, it was more about picking the proper ball.  And not by brand or by performance rating…it was on what color it was, or what cool logo they could find on it.  They did not care that their clubs came from a garage sale, or they only had a couple clubs compared to daddy.  I think for them it was about more than just a the game.  It was another new experience, it was time spent outside and it was special time spent with daddy.

There is something to be said about teaching our kids new skills.  And as a dad, I really appreciated teaching them something new.  Showing my girls how to line up their feet, keep their eye on the ball and the importance of a good follow through was a fun, learning experience. That said, I think just being with them was worth more than any perfect Birdie or Eagle drive down the middle of the fairway or sinking that 35 foot put.

And to do this at a course like Grand Pines was the perfect fit for our family.  Only 1 hour north of Winnipeg and minutes from the Grand Beach and South Beach Casino, Grand Pines has a great mix of poplar birch and pine trees in the heart of cottage country with an abundance of wildlife.  And while we went early in the year, the course was in immaculate shape.  The greens had the perfect weight and the fairway had lush green grass with very well maintained tee boxes.  I found this was the perfect course for my skill level. I am not a well seasoned golfer, but I did feel adequately challenged.

As for children this is a very family orientated course.  In fact they have a Kids Play Free program there are free clubs rentals and their very own balls along with free Green Fee’s after 6 pm everyday.

This is a great course that is great for families.  With full services this USGA standard course is great.  The clubhouse can suit your needs including a full grill during the peak golfing season.  This course is very much worth the drive for making great memories with the family.
