Your Family Doesn’t Have to Rely on “Dr. Google!”

These days it sometimes seems impossible to get in to see a doctor, sometimes parents want to get a doctors opinion on something, but it may not seem serious enough to actually make an appointment. The thought of sitting in a waiting room, especially with children can also be a deterrent for many families.

This past week I was put into that situation. My daughter had a spot show up on her leg. The spot had been there for at least a month – I was keeping an eye on it and it had not changed in size or color, but I still wanted to get a medical opinion on it before worrying myself with the endless images that may scare me by searching online.

Many people, myself included, did not realize that expert help is easily accessible and getting something stronger than an over-the-counter medication doesn’t have to mean long wait times in the doctor’s office. Here in Manitoba pharmacists can actually assess your condition, and if appropriate, write you a prescription.  Although I was not personally looking for a prescription for my daughter, I appreciated being able to go in and have a pharmacist look at the mark on her leg, because it helped me as her mom decide how I wanted to proceed. I am sure many families would love this option vs heading to a clinic or even the hospital ER and waiting for a long time for something that is not a big emergency.

For me as a mom I like to go to the doctor when there in an emergency and I’m happy that there is now an in-between option that I can get a medical opinion quickly and easily without relying on “Dr. Google”.

Speak with your local Shoppers Drug Mart pharmacist for more information.

I prefer going to a Dr or ER for expert medical advice unless it is something really minor, of course they also don't always know the answers but I feel safer since a pharmacist doesn't have medical training. For medication I like asking them and the notes provided with the medication are good too.

I rely quite a bit on my pharmacist as they have the most up to date information in their database :) ty

I have no problem asking my pharmacist for OTC medication advise or drug interaction info but as I have an autoimmune disease and multiple other meds I take I'm not so confident a pharmacy medical evaluation would be a good choice for me. I think having walk-in clinics attached to pharmacies would be a great improvement.

Oh I never realized... of course they would know! Thanks for the tip and it is great that the pharmacists are there late!

I find that Dr. Google just freaks me out! I always go to worse case scenario with what I read when searching online so this is a great option to seek an opinion and get peace of mind. Thanks for sharing!
