HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD COPE WITH THE LOSS OF A PET

TELL THEM A STORY

Stories are a great way to teach your child that sometimes things happen. You can find a book from the library about losing a pet, or you can come up with your own story. Stories help a child relate and can help them feel like it is going to be ok.

SPEND TIME TALKING ABOUT HOW THEY FEEL

As an adult, you are used to loss and have probably experienced it in many different ways by now. Your child, however, will need to talk about their emotions. They need to know that what they are feeling is normal and that those feelings will subside in time.

COMFORT YOUR CHILD

Be there to comfort your child. Hugs and cuddles can make a world of difference when a child finds out their pet has died. Let your child cry without making them feel less.

EXPLAIN DEATH

Whether you believe in heaven, hell, or just another life, it is important to explain your beliefs on death to your child. Giving them hope and showing them the process of life is an important step in the grieving process.

MAKE MEMORIES THEY CAN CHERISH

When my friend lost a dog, her dad brought her a beanie baby that looked like her dog. This was a simple gesture, but she felt like a part of her dog was still there. They made picture albums of fun times with their dog. Making memories and reminiscing on the good things can help your child cope and move on from a loss.

Consider these books: When a pet dies and I’ll always love you.
