HOW TO COPE WHEN YOUR BABY HAS COLIC

The crying is seemingly non-stop and you may be feeling as though you are starting to lose your mind. The frustration and stress that comes with a screaming baby can leave you feeling exhausted and totally helpless.

Most parents will attest to the fact that having a crying baby can be entirely unnerving, so you are not alone. If your baby is truly crying this often, it may be determined as the dreaded “C” word.

That’s right, COLIC.

Colic is a mysterious diagnosis as the cause has yet to be truly identified. There is no definitive x-ray or test that doctors can use in order to diagnose colic in infants either. In fact, Colic is technically diagnosed when no other explanation can be found.

The real question here is how in the world you as a parent, are going to get through this without losing your mind completely. There are ways!

STOP FEELING GUILTY

It is extremely important to make sure that you are not too hard on yourself. Colic is very simply one of those things that occur in some infants.

You need to remember that Colic is in absolutely no way your fault. It has nothing to do with parenting, feeding or really anything else that you could possibly do.

You are not to blame, and quite frankly, neither is your baby. Do not beat yourself up about your feelings either.  Accept that you may feel resentment, anger and sometimes even rage. It can be really difficult to deal with a non-stop crying baby and as long as you don’t act out on your feelings, you are doing just fine.

TAKE BREAKS

Do not be afraid to ask for help.  If the neverending crying is getting to you and you feel like you need to take a break, give yourself permission to do that. Feeling angry is totally common, but if you feel that you may act on the anger or it gets unbearable, you will need to make sure to seek immediate professional help.

IT TAKES TIME

Since the only “cure” for Colic is time, all you can do is try to keep you and your baby as comfortable as possible.

FIND SOOTHING TECHNIQUES

There are many different soothing techniques that can at least help to provide some comfort and relief for both you and baby.

Massage – Try giving your baby a gentle massage. Turn the lights down and make sure you are in a soothing environment.

Drive – Sometimes a car ride can soothe your baby to sleep and bonus, it gets you out of the house.

Swaddle – Swaddling can help your baby feel a great sense of comfort and help them fall asleep, and even stay asleep.  Swaddle your baby tightly in a blanket, or try a blanket made specifically for swaddling.

White Noise – Mimicking the sounds of the womb can provide great comfort for your baby. Try a white noise machine in your baby’s room, it certainly doesn’t hurt to try.

There are many ways to cope with a colicky baby. The main thing is to ensure that you don’t lose your head and remember that this too shall pass.
