START SMALL

While it may be tempting to make ½ your backyard into a vegetable garden, remember, you’ve never done this before.

You may not even enjoy gardening, so it is best to start small.

Small raised garden beds or pot gardening are great alternatives to making a huge garden plot.

If you live in an apartment or condo with no green space of your own, pot gardening is a great way to still get delicious, fresh vegetables.

PICK THE PERFECT SPOT

Remember, plants need sun, so planting your garden in a sunny location is key.

Your garden will also need water, so make sure you that you have close access to an outdoor tap or have a rain barrel close by for watering by hand.

WHAT ARE THE EASIEST VEGETABLES TO GROW IN A GARDEN?

Onions and potatoes are hearty vegetables and are great vegetables for beginner gardeners.

Tomatoes, cucumbers, peas, and carrots are great beginner gardener vegetables.

Perhaps even visit a greenhouse to find out which vegetables will grow well in your climate.

WHAT TOOLS DO YOU NEED TO START A GARDEN?

There is no set amount of gardening tools that one needs to start a garden. However, there are some items that will definitely make your gardening experience easier.

SOIL – having a good quality soil will help your veggies grow quickly and rich. Including compost into your soil will also enrich your vegetables.

GARDENING GLOVES – gardening gloves are a great tool for women wanting to garden without getting their hands dirty.

Dig It Gloves were designed by a woman for women.

HAND TROWEL – a hand trowel is a great tool to have especially when gardening in a small space.

SPADE – if you are gardening in a plot, a spade is a great way to dig holes to plant your potatoes in.

HOE – a hoe is great for planting things like carrots and cucumbers. Make a long row and sprinkle the seeds along the row. Then cover the row back up with the hoe.

WHEELBARROW – a wheelbarrow is great for loading all your supplies from your garage or shed and bringing them to your gardening spot. This way you don’t need to run back and forth.

HOSE AND/OR WATERING CAN – remember we talked about your garden needing lots of water to grow? A hose with a gentle rain sprayer or a watering can is something that you will use every day.

KNEELING PAD – a kneeling pad for you to work on while you are planting or weeding will help save your knees and back.

Vegetable gardening is a great way to enjoy delicious fresh vegetables.  Many people also find gardening a great way to relax and enjoy some much needed time outdoors.
